Essential nutrients are provided in fish larvae endogeneously through the egg under the form of unsaturated fatty acids, phospholipids, amino acids, vitamins and minerals. Although before feeding there is quite some similarity in the nutritional composition amongst species, the feeding preferences and ecological niche of each species make it necessary to tailor feeding strategies for pre-metamorphosing larvae to their natural planktonic requirements.
