The Poultry Protein & Fat Council has combined its recently completed literature
review and a feather meal videotape into a new CD-ROM that is available to members,
nutritionists, and potential PPFC customers at no charge.

“We are pleased to provide this information in an easy-to-navigate format,”
said John Starkey, P.E., U.S. Poultry & Egg Association vice president of
environmental programs and PPFC liaison. “This will be a useful tool for
promoting our member companies’ products throughout the world. It also will
serve as an educational tool, enabling the poultry rendering industry and nutritionists
to locate the information they need quickly and efficiently.”

The Literature Review was conducted this year by Dr. Gene Pesti, professor of
poultry science and animal nutrition at The University of Georgia. It includes
over 400 articles on the use of poultry meal, feather meal, and poultry fat as
feed ingredients in virtually all animal sectors. The review also includes an
explanation of how poultry protein and fat products are produced, product definitions,
and the latest research information on feeding to various species.

The 16-minute video, available in English, discusses using feather meal as an
animal protein source in feed rations for feedlot, cow/calf, range cattle, and
dairy operations. It highlights research conducted by the University of Florida
and the University of Nebraska that suggest feather meal performs well in the
areas of cost, increased performance, milk production gains, and improved breeding
efficiency.

The Poultry Protein & Fat Council was established in 1989 to promote research
and usage of feather meal, poultry meal, poultry fat, and poultry blood meal as
valuable feed ingredients. The council sponsors an annual seminar and funds research
and promotional programs. Council members also attend feed industry trade shows
to promote the use of their products.
