In my own experience along these last 14 years, I have found as the article says that the fastest the calf learns how to eat something different than milk (grains, 28 to 40 days old fertilized green grass or good quality hay), the better the performance and less the days needed to weaning, also you can observe that your dam does not loose as much body condition as if the calf uses just milk for feeding, making it easier to get your cow pregnant again. I do think that small amount of grains and the extra work to succed on this task is worth.
