Dear Dr. Karki,

As you know, poultry are significantly more resistant than pigs to deleterious effects of fumonisins, specially chickens, ducks and turkeys. Therefore I considered that it was more important refer the problems with fumonisins and the solutions against that mycotoxins in pigs than poultry.

As in the article was mentioned, in August 2006, a publication of the Official Journal of the European Union, recommended a guidance values for fumonisins B1+B2 in swine mixed feed (12% humidity) of 5 ppm, maximum. On the contrary the guidance value recommended for fumonisins B1+B2 in poultry mixed feed (12% humidity) was 20 ppm, maximum (Official Journal of the European Union). You can see the big difference between the two animal species.

Are you really worried with poultry fumonisin problems in your country?

On the other hand, one of the more important subjects in my article was the information about the effectiveness of a special phyllosilicate clay against the fumonisins in pigs, according to the results obtained in the trials (in vivo) which were done by LAMIC in Brazil, as you can see in the article.

That could be a good and effective solution against the fumonisins toxicity in swine production.

Very informative article; I would like to know more on how effective is the use of clay as a toxin binder in the poultry industry, especially in most of the mycotoxins known to be harmful to the birds.
Anybody know the toxicity levels of mycotoxins and heavy metels especially Cu in rabbit?

About your first question, it depends on the kind of clay to be used. You can ask to the enterprises which are in Engormix publishing advertisements about the clay products against mycotoxins.

thanx for your reply although if we look about the pathogenecity and immunological properties of mycosis and mycotoxicosis specially concern with fumosin which is being produced by a dield fungus fusarium as poultry broiler which is coming up in developing country problem of mycotoxicosis is also coming up as diseases like hemorrhagic proliferative proventriculitis and gizzaed erosion, spiking mortality syndrome in young broiler of age 7-18days, runting and stunting syndrome and malabsorption syndrome in all these conditions poultry health experts are indicating the implication of mycotoxin.

This article is very educative, highly technical too. FB1 can be compared with Aflatoxin B1 in contaminated Corn and Sorghum in Africa. However,further study is required on the effect of Fumonisins in chicken and fish feeds.
