Nutritional research has recently emphasized the role of nutrients on gene expression and regulation. Although not as broadly appreciated, nutrients also play an important role in controlling gene expression.It has been shown that carbohydrates, fatty acids, minerals and vitamins of all the dietary constituents participate in the regulation of gene expression.

In simple words gene expression means transcription, translation and post transcriptional and translational modifications in a sequential process, which leads to synthesis of specific protein may be of enzymes or hormones or other active proteins. The end product of gene expression is protein, which may have specific physiological or biochemical function in the animal body. The gene expression is influenced by many factors such as transcriptional factors, translational factors, post transcriptional and translational modification factors and its regulators and environmental factors, among environmental factors Nutrients are important and major factors which influences gene expression.

The effects of nutrition on gene expression are only the beginning of the story because dietary components impact every step from gene to protein to metabolic product(s), including signal transduction and post-translational modifications of proteins.

Role of various nutrients on gene expression is occurring normally in body, is the basic knowledge. This basic knowledge can be applied on various aspects.
